Notes from the Underground

I once read somewhere that the basement represents your subconcious. If it's choked up and full: it's likely your life is choked up with the past and too full of it to live in the now, let alone the future.

Letting go of stuff, then, is a metaphor for forgiveness.

Is this why it can be so darn difficult to clear out?

Let's say you come across a letter from someone you loved (and who loved you) but he let you down. Do you keep it, or toss it?

I think the metaphor breaks down, right here, in a fundamental way. It would have you believe that you keep the letter because you are hanging on to the hurt. But it could equally be true that you are hanging on to the letter because you have forgiven that person and choose to remember the love.

However, if you keep every darn single thing, perhaps you aren't letting go of the hurt. I think one has to choose, to physically go through the stuff and choose. Are you keeping the object in love or in anger? Have you really forgiven the hurts? If you have, you will know by the stuff you keep.

Keep only those things which really do mean "love."
Say a prayer over the rest and let it go.
That's what I'm going to try to do.
